My wife and I are part-time process servers for a number of area attorneys and I've seen people walking around inside their houses simply refusing to come to the door. Not much you can do. I try to catch them while they're out working in the yard. As long as you can speak to them, if they refuse to take the papers from you, you can simply drop them at their feet and it is considered a lawful service. Also, if you can get one of the kids to accept them (if they're over twelve), that's also a lawful service, at least here in Washington.

I have served process ONE time. I was working as a paralegal and my boss had me do it as a favor to one of his beer-buddies. (It was a divorce case.)

The look of horror on the poor woman's face took me by the heart. I sat down with her and told her how she had to get her own lawyer double-quick.

I went back to the office and told the boss that he would have to hire someone else to do that dirty work.

Strangely enough, he did not fire me, he respected me.

If you want to make your money serving process, by all means do so.

It's real hard to shower off the FILTH afterwards.

"...a favor to one of his beer-buddies."

Oh, sure, everybody has a rotten lawyer story to tell. Till the first time you need one, then you go looking for the nastiest SOB you can find. I can't believe how many so-called conservatives get all bent out of shape when it comes to this subject. As I said, this is part-time work that somebody has to do, but hell, I'm probably taking work away from some illegal immigrant. Cry me a freaking river!
