Cadaver Dogs Join the Search for Joanna Date: Thursday, May 27 @ 06:43:02 CDT Topic: National Amber Alert News

Cadaver Dogs Join the Search for Joanna Texas Her name is Shadow. A Siberian Husky trained to search out the missing - alive or dead. "What we're doing is eliminating places," said Captain Bill Drewell of the Lubbock Sheriff's Department.

On Wednesday, Shadow was helping the sheriff's department search through cars at a towing yard. "What we're doing is going to some of the areas that we didn't get to search over the weekend," said Drewell.

Over the weekend, 700 volunteers searched a 10 mile radius around the home of Joanna Rogers. With nothing found, the net was cast wider, utilizing the specialized talents of cadaver dogs to narrow the focus. "We have a thousand square miles here. We don't have a general area. So we're just trying to cover everything we can," said Drewell.

Forty officers fanned out across the county, but nothing new. There is still optimism, but there is also a very real gravity, an unspoken fear exemplified by shadow's occupation - cadaver dog. "The question's been asked, 'Are we looking for a body?,' We're looking for a person. We're optimistic, we have hopes, we gotta keep our hopes up. We're trying to find Joanna Rogers."

This story has largely been missing from national news (as opposed to the Dru Sjodin story), but an Amber Alert was issued almost as soon as she went missing, which tells me the authorities must have had a suspect from the beginning. I've heard the boyfriend has "lawyered up" and is not cooperating fully. Here is additional background on the case from her website: http://members.cox.net/bringjohome/Joanna_Rogers_Info1.html A nationwide missing persons bulletin was issued by the Lubbock County, Texas, Sheriff's Department on the evening of May 6th, 2004, two days after Joanna Rogers went missing from her home just outside the Lubbock city limits. Joanna, a junior at Lubbock High School, came home from her job at a sandwich shop about 12:20 a.m. on May 4th, and had a short conversation with her mother before apparently going to bed. At 7 a.m., there was no trace of Joanna Rogers. The teenager's belongings -- debit card, car keys, shoes, clothes and cell phone -- were still in her room. Her parents reported her missing immediately. Her mother said Joanna was looking forward to participating in a dance recital that night. She has no history of running away from home.

There was no sign of forced entry and the family's two dogs did not alert the household to an intruder. County authorities have analyzed the youngster's computer hard drive as well her mother's. They've interviewed co-workers, a boyfriend and others who might have seen Joanna before she disappeared. The Sheriff's Department has no substantial leads at this time, but believes foul play is involved.

They won't say publicly that they do, but like I said, the boyfriend has lawyered-up and I've heard he's not cooperating fully.

God bless her parents through this horrible episode, but I did find it "odd" that in their first local TV interview, as her parents described her, her mom would say "she has a part time job as a sandwich shop, she gets good grades,.." and her dad would say "she WAS a good girl, she WORKED hard,...." The mom actually corrected the dad in the middle of the interview and said "is, IS a good girl."

Not that I know of. He's probably a juvenile, so they won't release it.
Not long ago, they got on the news and said, "We know farmers are beginning to plant and work their fields. We are asking them to keep an extra eye out for body parts, or clothing items, or anything at all and report it to authorities. It's not uncommon for a farmer to find a blanket or a forgotten jacket from kids that might have been "parking" on the backroads and turnrows around here. There are no "wooded" areas to use for finding one's thrill on blueberry hill, so kids "park" in cotton fields.

There is alot, and I mean ALOT of new construction (business, residential and road) going on around town. It wouldn't surprise me if she's under a slab or parking lot somewhere.
I wonder if cadaver dogs can sniff under concrete?

Why must we assume she is dead? If we must assume this then we need more info about boyfriends and such. But, sadly, this happens everyday in this country.

"I wonder if cadaver dogs can sniff under concrete?"

In some circumstances, yes. It depends on the the width, breadth and depth of the slab and where the body is in relation to all that concrete.
