Asay, Case 'open' to ceding to each other

CHEYENNE - A conversation between two GOP congressional candidates reveals their resolve to unseat Rep. Barbara Cubin, R-Wyo., in this year's election.
Earlier this week, state Sen. Cale Case, R-Lander, gave a speech in Riverton. He mentioned that he and Cheyenne attorney Bruce Asay had talked about one or the other of them dropping out to ensure a strong challenger in the August Republican primary, now less than three months away.
On Wednesday both men confirmed they had had the conversation, and both said they haven't committed to ceding the advantage to the other.
Case and Asay are two of six Republicans who have filed to run for Congress. That field includes Cubin, who as a five-term incumbent has served 10 years in Washington, D.C.
"We're not making a promise to each other," Case said Wednesday. "But it's a crowded field, and it's hard to get traction."
But, he said, both he and Asay are open to the idea of discussing the possibility.
"I respect Bruce and he respects me, and we're the top two in the race," Case said.
For his part, Asay said there is a significant body of people in the state who want to see change. It's a possibility that having both candidates could split a GOP protest vote, he added.
"As we go through the campaign, we will evaluate our positions," Asay said. "We're going to look for the best candidate for the people of Wyoming. We both think we need a change."
I believe some of the objections are due to the illness of her husband taking her away from her duties in congress. Her husband was my parent's family physician until he was forced to retire due to health. am not certain what his health problems are, but he has been in and out of several hospitals in the past three or four years.
