Why invent a term like "lesbigay"? Why not just use "homosexual", male or female?

I've always wondered why they call themselves gay and lesbian. Both of the males and females are "gay"/homosexual so it's just like saying gay gay. My husband laughs when I call them the gay gays for that very reason. It makes no sense.

Actually, I'm surprised they didn't label it "lesbigaytrans" or "lesbigaytransques" since 'transexual' and 'questioning' are now part of their culture.
