American journalists fascinated with U.S. mistreatment of Iraqi detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison gave a collective yawn yesterday when President Bush played host to seven victims of genuine torture perpetrated by Saddam's Fedahyeen at Abu Ghraib.
The dearth of media interest came despite some fairly expansive quotes from Bush himself on the matter, delivered in the Oval Office:
"I'm honored to shake the hand of a brave Iraqi citizen who had his hand cut off by Saddam Hussein," said Bush with the Iraqi victims by his side. "I'm with six other Iraqi citizens, as well, who suffered the same fate. They are examples of the brutality of the tyrant."
After weeks of front page photos depicting Iraqi prisoners forced to wear underwear on their heads, and anguished accounts of detainees being pelted with Nerf footballs, scenes of genuine torture victims thanking an American president for ending the true horrors of Abu Ghraib should have prompted major coverage.
But the New York Times, which has offered perhaps the most hysterical coverage of the prison scandal, mentioned not a word in Wednesday editions of the seven torture victims.
That other elite media cheerleader for the U.S. prison scandal, the Washington Post, was nearly as bored as the Times by the Abu Ghraib seven, offering only a few scant references to the Oval Office event in its Wednesday editions.
After introducing the Iraqi torture victims, Bush went on to thank the Texas businessman and surgeon who made their rehabilitation possible and offered to take questions from the reporters on hand.
But the only "torture" journalists wanted to discuss was that allegedly perpetrated by U.S. troops.
"Mr. President, can you say why General Sanchez is being replaced as the top commander in Iraq? Is that in any way related to the prisoner abuse scandal?" asked the first questioner.
Likewise, the second reporter's question had nothing to do with the genuine torture victims sitting in front of him.
After two more off-topic questions, the president thanked the reporters and ended the session.
Media??? You mean Sadam loyalists don't you!
BTTT
Well, of course. You don't think for one moment that the left actually gives two you-know-whats whether or not any Iraqis are actually tortured or not, do you...?
Pay no attention whatsoever to what they say; only what they actually DO.
President Bush said that Gen. Sanchez's record was "exemplerary."
Now that's news...
Here in Cincy, Jim Scott of WLW managed to get Lefty Reporterette Ann Compton to bring up the meeting. The way she phrased it was classic Leftist doublespeak: she said the President met with Abu Ghraib prisoners, including one whose bionic hand he shook. She forgot to mention who cut off his hand and who gave him the bionic arm.
I think you missed my point. He mispronounced "exemplary."
Why does he constantly do that c*ap. Man he loses a lot of votes in that 7th grade reading level female 30/40 something set. They don't know much, but they know how to pronounce the 3K words in their vocabulary.
Unbelievable as to how mainstream media's biasness in America-bashing is so transparent and their displays in reporting to manipulate the hearts and minds of the people.
This is prime beef proof that the liberal media are anti-American and see no "good" in our U.S. soldiers fighting to preserve the freedom of Iraq or the U.S.
As a female 40-something who is well above the 7th grade reading level, I tend to pay more attention to WHAT he says than to HOW he says it. No lost vote here. Am I detecting a bit of misogyny on your part, or are you just trying to be funny?
I got it... my point was that the media would report the mispronunciation as "news"
Go media elite! These stories WILL get out! Very soon, YOU will be at the opposite end of the interviews, answering questions as to how YOU could be so CRUEL to those 7 Iraqis who had gone through so much, by avoiding them altogether while they were available here in Washington!
Americans are getting quite a course in "Media Bias" these days!
That was totally out of left field...........
Linda Vester just had the surgeon who did the surgery and the journalist who found the men - very interesting story.
I wish she was on at night...she usually has a really good show.
Doesn't she have a show on Saturday or Sunday evening?????
I'm gonna run out and see if this story is on the front page of my evening newspaper tonight, and I'm going to watch NBC/CBS/ABC to see if they cover it too.
(not)
I'll have to check. I usually just watch FNC at night during the week.
