Fortune 500 Companies See Money in Gay Families

Wednesday, May 26, 2004

By Catherine Donaldson-Evans

NEW YORK — Now that gay marriage has taken center stage as a hot-button issue and has been legalized in Massachusetts, Fortune 500 companies are eyeing its business potential — and seeing dollar signs.

Recognizing same-sex couples and families as an emerging market, large corporations have begun targeting the demographic in their ads.

Companies including International Business Machines (IBM), Volvo and JP Morgan (JPM) have featured gay couples or parents, mostly in print or online ads. And Subaru has been marketing to the gay population as a whole for years.

I did a search and didn't see this posted. I thought it would be good to point these companies out to those of us who might want to make sure they never get another dime of our money.

I hope they enjoy the "benefits" of bedding down (no pun intended) with the mo's, because I forsee many more losses coming their way than what they will make from this minority group.

True! Every homosexual I have ever seen didn't seem too "gay" at all. Quite the contrary, as a matter of fact. most were ticked about something and seemed quite angry in general! :)

I am still waiting for GLAAD and the NAACP to protest Nasbro for making the 'Happy Family' series of Barbies.

I fail to see where business is going to make any "more" money off of gays than they already do. Black people like me don't understand (or agree) with Gays' discrimination claims. They still buy houses, cars, clothes, electronics, food, etc. I haven't seen them missing out on these pleasures or neccessities of life. So why is there a need for "gay advertising" to attract "gay dollars"? Does a gay business executive who wants to buy a BMW, NOT buy a BMW because he doesn't see a gay couple in their advertisement? No, it doesn't stop him, just like it doesn't stop Black people from buying what we want when we see it (or need it).

I know you probably despise Ralph Nader-or at the very least, his political ideology-but he's the author of one of the funniest, most memorable lines in history:

"If they could, corporations would place advertmisements on the inside of your eyelids, so that you'd be sold crap every waking moment of your lives."

My concern is the radical homosexuals will see this as a means of leverage to push themeselve and their agenda into everything -- which I know they are currently doing -- but if companies and organizations see a chance to make more money, sadly, those companies will do it. Health care would be a good example of the real problem: premiums for everyone would go up in order to help pay the additional health costs for gays -- in reality, the companies wouldn't mind because their revenues increase and they could blame being 'required' to include gay 'families', all the while reaping benefits of money and being pc correct. Forgetting the money, this could be a disaster for the whole society...the gay agenda would poison everything!

I agree completely.

At some point we as conservatives should start exercising our power in numbers more. they pander to 3% of the population but surely their buying power is dwarfed by ours.

they take us for granted.

For the life of me I've got absolutely no clue what the big deal is............All businesses change their advertising campaigns on a regular basis.

I occassionally try knew products because of something I see in an ad, if I like the product I'll keep using it, if I don't I won't buy it again.

Corporations are in business to make money, and if they can broaden their customer base through targetted advertising campaigns they will.
