The guys in the neighborhood were using the igniter from a propane grill, it works perfectly, and has the remote start button. They were firing potatoes hundreds of yards using a loooong barrel and a lot of hair spray.

4 inch schedule 40 PVC seems to work well on the spud guns I've seen...
I've used welding gas (the small cans used by plumbers) for fuel instead of hair spray. Less sticky, and it makes a four foot blue flare as the potato is expelled from the bbl... Extra nice on summer nights.
