From what I understand of Japan (never been beyond the transit lounge in Narita) the society is extremely closed. Foreigners are OK for business, but little further.

I shudder to think what problems exist in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. We see some action there, but what don't we see?

I traveled to Japan many times and found them to be really quite gracious, but maybe that was because I rarely stayed in the big cities. One Sunday I tried walking across a small rural town on Shikoku. It should have taken me all of 20 minutes, but ended up taking about three hours, because of all the people that came out of their houses to stop me just so they could engage me in conversation. One thing that stuck in my mind was how much they really loved Americans.

I can't speak for Japan but Korea has a large number of foreign workers (Pakistani) who were excepted but by no means attempted to be assimilated like in Europe or the US. Both Japan and Korea are in the same boat as Spain was before Madrid, one attack and they'll probably be out of the Coalition, a likely target for AQ. Indonesia and Malaysia are hotbeds, Thailand is trying hard but I don't know how much success they are having.
