May 26, 2004 --MTV has finally got its Gay TV.
"This was either the worst-kept secret in television or the longest-awaited promise to a very loyal and important television audience," MTV Networks chief, Tom Freston said yesterday.
MTV will launch a gay channel next February on Time Warner cable in New York, Los Angeles and four other major markets.
The ad-supported network aims to appeal to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender audiences who represent about 15 million people and $485 billion in buying power, according to MTV consultant Matt Farber, the executive credited with first bringing the concept of a gay network to Viacom several years ago.
The network will be called Logo.
About 25 percent of Logo's programming will be original the rest reruns of established shows and movies.
The new network says is has more than 40 concepts in development with sister networks MTV, VH1, TV Land, CMT, Comedy Central, Showtime and even CBS News.
Freston and other network officials were careful not to say which programs it plans to buy.
A full schedule will be released later this summer, they said.
Logo has already secured the rights to broadcast at least 100 movies from major studios, including gay-themed films like "Gods & Monsters" and "Serving in Silence" (a Glenn Close and Barbara Streisand project about a lesbian army officer) and gay-cult favorites like "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?"
MTV officials say they are not concerned about sexual content because there won't be any.
All of the programming on Logo will be in line with the broadcast standards that apply to other basic cable channels, Freston said, preparing for the inevitable backlash MTV is likely to get from some conservative organizations.
"This is not a network about sex or sexually explicit content," Freston said.
More sexually oriented fare, such as Showtime's "The L Word" or "Queer as Folk," would likely appear on Logo's pay video-on-demand channel, said Farber. The VOD channel is set to launch in conjunction with Logo next winter.
Freston said the timing of Logo's launch had little to do with the same-sex marriages that are being conducted in Massachusetts and elsewhere.
"The timing is really just coincidence and not part of a grand strategy to ride down the aisle with all these happy couples," Freston said.
"If anything, we wish we had finished our work and made this announcement earlier in the year," he said.
I made money off a "pink sheet" named QBID.PK back in Mar/Apr, so there is already a presense out there....
Hmm, I wonder what kind shows it will pack.
Sure it is. It's in the title...
I wonder which MTV will be on top...
People in show business have always tended to be lowlife whores -- as far back as Roman times, at least. They want a big audience because they want to make money, so they almost invariably appeal to the worst in human nature.
Died from Aids or some other lifestyle-related disease, perhaps?
Study after study shows that male homosexuals make up, at most, about 2.8% of the population, Lesbians about half that.
Watch it go national, and forced into cable packages for all viewers. When it does, I will go satellite.
America has misplaced its moral compass and having it in our hands is what kept us ahead of the "pack" of slavering, communist/socialist wolves. The remedy, of course, is to cleanse our "central government" and get rid of all the dead weight: like Byrd-Brain, Specter, Daschole, Kennedy, The Twins From Maine, The two Rinos from Ohio....make no mistake, we're in trouble both from the DemocRATs and the RepublicRATs!
We need to rid our society of political correctness, pornography and the mysterious "love" affair the left (and our complicit politicians) are having with homosexuals that does nothing but further their demonic, sinful and disgusting lifestyle. They, of course, want to share this lifestyle with the rest of Americans by ruining the institution of marriage and family and they want to get their evil, clammy hands on the youngsters!
Americans need to stop moddy-coddling perversion; turn their backs on these satanists and relegate them to the sewers and dump-sites from which they spawned.
If it's homosexual, it has to be about sex, else it would just be about close friends and buddies.

Andy Rooney and Dan Rather are gay?
Time to ask the cable providers for a menu system whereby subscribers get to pick the stations they pay for. The technology is there - the demand is there - may the market speak and let some of this crap programming be cut and left in the dust where it belongs.
Oh, for farkin' pete's sake! Can't they spare us?
That combined with a narcissistic desire for adulation and worship. Normal people don't want that.
this is the internal email from tom freston and judy mcgrath, the heads of mtv and the new gay channel
Yesterday, we officially announced the launch of our newest television network, which will target lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, as well as their friends and families. This new and advertising supported channel will be called LOGO, and we plan to be in the homes of cable viewers nationally next February.
We know this has been either the worst kept secret in television or the longest awaited promise to a very loyal television audience. We have long hoped this day should and would come, and we are proud that MTV Networks is the company to launch this bold new network.
We want to provide a real home on television that lesbians and gays can honestly call their own, and its taken some time to figure out the right positioning and business model for it. With LOGO, we believe we now have it just right and it is our hope that over time this channel will inspire the same kind of connection with its viewers that make all our networks famous.
So why the name LOGO? We wanted to avoid stereotypical images, ideas and icons.
A logo is all about identity: and LOGO, the network, aims to embrace the individual and collective identities present in the lesbian and gay community
a community that is amazingly diverse, but joined by similar points of view and sensibilities. different, together. We hope the logo for LOGO reflects that idea and celebrates it. Our MTV Networks are all about forging deep, meaningful connections with specialized viewers, and LOGO is no different. We hope that LOGO will provide programming that is smart, funny, authentic and inclusive; content that offers something relevant to its target audience.
We will have many more details about the look, feel and programming on LOGO, in the coming months, as well as news on distribution and advertisers. In the meantime, check out www.logo-tv.com for a quick promo.
Given a great creative team, we're confident we will produce something that gays and lesbians and all of us who enjoy quality television will embrace.
We want to thank all the people from across the company who so incredibly volunteered their time all the while doing their regular day-jobs -- to close the studio deals, to secure the name, to develop the LOGO brand, to create the website, to secure distribution and advertisers, and to just keep the trains running on time. There is clearly a lot of passion for this new network all over the company.
Please join us in celebrating this exciting and perhaps even historic day. We couldn't be more thrilled.
"Wow! I bet that averages out to a butt load per fag."
OUCH!
