I saw that the poster of this thread said something like, the call to prayer is in arabic and since s/he doesn't understand arabic it's okay to listen to it 5 times a day.

Here's what I understand about their prayers: that once you start saying the prayer called Shahada, it makes you convert automatically to mohammedanism.

Even if you don't want to.

The words of the Shahada are contained in the call to prayer (which I won't post because it's anathema to me).

So if you eventually get to know the words, even in arabic, and even not understanding what you're saying, isn't this according to their thinking, going to make you a moslem?

Is this what they're aiming for now? I wouldn't put anything past them.

I'm sure some moslem-apologist will come along and flame me for being so insensitive to their culture, but I've had enough of this.

They'd rather blow everyone to kingdom come than to live in the 21st century. There's no playing nice with these whackos. It's their way or they slaughter the entire world. The question is how long do we play patty cake, accomodate, appease, when we know they won't honor anything they sign. They lie, cheat and kill to get what they want. At some point we have to take the gloves off and treat these guys worse than felons in American prisons. So, I'd like to know what would spur us into rational thought and purposeful action. The next terrorist attack here with ten or twenty thousand innocents dead? Last night Bush barely hinted at the extent of the free world's danger when he said terrorists want to take over the entire Middle East. Come on, they're not stopping at the edge of the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, Pacific or any other body of water, large or small. Perceived weakness emboldens them and they rush around, strapping on bigger bombs. I'm hoping Bush understands this (I think he does), and that we're being given small bites of info to digest so he doesn't scare us. It's like training your dog. First we learn to sit, stay, then gradually, we're shown the tough stuff: the long stay, etc..

-The problem I have with these types of arguments is that Christians are called to preach the Gospels and to covert non-believers and have been doing so for 2000 years. I fail to see how listening to the call to prayer is trying to convert anyone to become a Muslim. These arguments smack of intolerance and violate people's rights to freedom of religion and freedom of speech. The only legitimate basis for opposition is the noise issue.

Get a freeking alarm to remind yourself of the prayer time. Don't scream on the loudspeakers at 4Am that there is no god but allah! There ia better god, his name is Jesus!!

But moving to practical current political issues, Muslims really have no excuse in pointing out things that Christianity has for the most part grown out of.

That's it, in a nutshell. And as has been pointed out many times already, until there's a moslem Reformation, we're all going to keep on living this nightmare.

"The "call to prayer" IS a prayer. Why should those of other religions be forced to listen to their prayers?"

I never said people should be forced to listen to prayers or other religions. No one should be forced to and I disagree with the waiver to the noise ordinance that was granted, whatever the purpose. I just think it's hypocritical for a Christian to say that it shouldn't be allowed solely on the basis that it doesn't fit with what I am comfortable with (e.g. Oh my God, they are trying to convert me!).

"Did you ever learn the phrase "thin edge of the wedge" in your time at WMich.?"

This is exactly why I disagree with the variance. It opens the doors for other religious (or other groups') practices to be carried out above the laws of the city.

"Jeezlouise, you've been on FR one week, and already are posting apologist nonsense for the moslems.

How come?"

Just because I've been signed up for a week doesn't mean I haven't been around. I usually find out what something is about before I sign up for it. BTW, I don't really care if were a Muslim, Jewish, Christian or some other religion or group. They should be allowed to say what they want within the law.

From an academic standpoint it is a valid debate with Christians who claim that nothing bad was ever done by Christians in pursuance of their religion,

Guess you missed the part where the Pope has publicly acknowledged that the Church's treatment of Galileo was wrong.

Institutions evolve, change, grow. I see Islam steadfast and determined to return to their barbarism of the 7th century. The people who burnt down the Library at Alexandria are the same mindset who blew up the Buddha statues in Afghanistan several years ago. They have nothing but disrespect for other cultures and will blow up or burn that which they cannot understand.

"Keeping in mind that this kid just joined up a few days ago. I am highly suspicious, so to speak..."

I can assure you that he isn't a troll, he just needs the knowledge that some time on FR will provide. Give him time, he's a slow learner and went to a crappy school......;-)

Actually, in my observations of Chad's posts, I would bet that you two would get along pretty good outside of this thread.

Just pokin' ya in the ribs E!

I'm afraid you don't understand the nature of islam, in that case. Perhaps now that you've graduated from school, you'll be able to spend some time reading up on this culture.

Mohammedanism is not a culture that is easily accomodated with the West. We'll all find out to our sorrow one day.

BTW, I don't really care if were a Muslim, Jewish, Christian or some other religion or group. They should be allowed to say what they want within the law.

Ah, if only that were the case now. You see, the rest of us are forced to curtail our own religious beliefs in public. Haven't you picked up on that along the way? Why the special treatment for this segment of the population?

Isn't the whole "call to prayer" thing a bit outdated in these technological times?

Why don't they just page everybody's cell phone when it's time to pray?

"They should be allowed to say what they want within the law."

There's going to be quite a cacophony of sounds 5 times a day then isn't there....because I guarantee you, we are not going to stand around and take IT anymore. Get the picture yet? The guys posting their ROCK 'N ROLL call to Church ideas are serious....because under YOUR rules, they would be able to do THEIR call to prayers also....You seem rather innocently ignorant....A little suggestion....please go study a little more before you continue to show all your ignorance to the FR world here. Or keep posting your ignorance for all to see. Whatever...it's your choice.

Be careful. You might be mistaken for a liberal when you take quotes out of context like that.

I didn't miss it, but several people on FR and elsewhere definitely have.

I see Islam steadfast and determined to return to their barbarism of the 7th century.

You may be right, but let's hope you're wrong. I think this current conflict may bring about Islam's reformation. Those who don't reform will be at war with the rest of the world, and will die accordingly.

I'll add that in some areas it is illegal to hunt on Sundays. I find that one very offensive.

I have yet to hear a single moslem, or group of moslems, convincingly say that world domination by islam is NOT the goal of islam.

That's because you get your information from the media. People who just want to live their lives peacefully aren't usually covered because it's not sensationalist and therefore doesn't make more money for Big Media.

I've never heard that one, but it sucks. It doesn't affect me though, because I don't hunt. After a 15-year absence from this country it's taking a while to get back into things. We're going fishing quite a bit now (catfish goooood!), and eventually I'll start hunting again. Then I'm going to have to check if my state has that same stupid law.
