Tonight, petitions could stall Muslim prayer call
http://www.freep.com/news/locway/call25_20040525.htm
If they choose to defy the law and broadcast regardless of the vote : Will the police in Hamtramck do the right thing...Or will PC allow them to get away with breaking the law?
I think you and I are, for the most part, in agreement. The main area that we appear to agree on is that you think it's great that Christians are no on "the receiving end", while I don't like the idea of seeing any one religion on :the receiving end"
The bottom line for me is, Christianity is being forced out of public view at an alarming rate (and often through the most trivial things - current ACLU actions as an example) while other religions are getting "prime time" airing, such as Muslim kids given a special room to pray in at school, but Christian kids better not pray or else lawsuits would be filed quicker than you can say :Bob's your uncle"...
This "Call to prayer" issue is just another example of it.
We're really arguing minutae now, but at least we both agree the request for the waiver was wrong, as well as its granting by the council.
PC will allow them to get away with "breaking the law", since PC is what got them the waiver to begin with...
I wonder if those loudspeakers are powered by electricity... Hmmmm ;0)
Hmm, ignoring the law, if it turns against them? So much for looking for compromise and the rule of law. Civil disobedience, or throwing the first proverbial firebomb?
Okay, it's not really right to like it. I'm just hoping that since this is happening anyway, the Christians could at least get a good lesson out of it.
You are definitely right about the ACLU angle. They are conspicuously absent from this debate, and that reveals their agenda.
The "call to prayer" IS a prayer. Why should those of other religions be forced to listen to their prayers?
Did you ever learn the phrase "thin edge of the wedge" in your time at WMich.?
Doesn't seem so.
Jeezlouise, you've been on FR one week, and already are posting apologist nonsense for the moslems.
How come?
Follow it back to the beginning and understand the context.
Good catch.
It will be interesting to see how the citizens react to this. It looks like they are forcing the people to accept this.
Yeah....those Ten Commandments really make life tough.
Actually, it was me that brought up the booze on Sundays thing - but not in the context of a comparison between religions. We just got sidetracked on a peripheral issue... :0)
You think the Ten Commandments are a good basis for law in this country?
This is the usual argument put forth by moslems and moslem-apologists.
The Inquisition was centuries ago, we don't live that way today.
Why do moslems insist on comparing what THEY are doing today with what was done by the west hundreds of years ago?
Why don't you try to live in the 21st century?
They're hardly screeching: "Come on down to Fred's SUV Emporium, where you can get the best deal of your life."
And even if they were, if I had to hear that 5 times a day, I'd object.
The Muslims would counter by claiming that church bells ringing are the same thing, so they should be allowed to 'practice' their religion freely. I did hear of a case a year or two ago where a couple bought an old house next to a church in eastern MA. Lexington maybe. At any rate, they were driven nuts by the church bells which rang on the quarter hours, hourly, etc. 24/7. They sued and the church had to curtail the ringing.
Let's see how long that lasts.

I'm convinced that Islam is a death cult for insecure guys. Intelligent women need not apply.
From an academic standpoint it is a valid debate with Christians who claim that nothing bad was ever done by Christians in pursuance of their religion, and that those who did various bad things long ago weren't really Christian. They don't want to acknowledge that there was a time where Christians committed these atrocities too. These arguments invariably reek of the No True Scotsman fallacy.
But moving to practical current political issues, Muslims really have no excuse in pointing out things that Christianity has for the most part grown out of. Millions of Muslims have already moved into the 21st century, but a huge chunk of them had better adapt or be exterminated.
When the other side uses everything against you, and has the stated goal of domination over you isn't even the minutae important? I have yet to hear a single moslem, or group of moslems, convincingly say that world domination by islam is NOT the goal of islam. In fact the opposite is true. The vocal minority are the only ones that can be heard; usually in the sounds of gunfire and explosions. As stated, islam is an ideology; an ideology thus far this century of dominance and/or destruction and it is a threat to our very existence.
I think it is important that people see these types of show downs for what they are. This thing in MI is not about neighbors that can't get along. This is about an ideology that will try to force itself into every aspect of everyone's lives if allowed to. It will use our laws to do so until such time that it can put itself above our laws. At that time, those who can no longer fight back will be converted or killed. It is happening across the globe in this very day and age.
These are not ignorant, or bigotted ideas. These are ideas based on the current state of things. It's not my job to convince islam to get along with me. It is islam's job to convince me that it is willing to get along with me. So far islam is not trying very hard to convince anyone that it is tolerant and willing to coexist with others.
