why do they hang on to this extreme southern accent, (which grates on northern ears)

Why should they give a rat's @$$ about your over-sensitive northern ears?

I'm from the Midwest originally, and have always thought that the Northeastern habit of adding consonants where they don't belong is much more irritating and affected than the Southern habit of dropping them.
