I encourage everybody to get up early on Memorial Day (May 31) and go to a Memorial Day service. They're all over the place, so finding one isn't hard.
If you're staying home, pick up a local paper or open the yellow pages and call some of the local cemeteries. You'll find one.
If you're traveling, chances are there will be a service somewhere near where you are.
One hour on a Monday morning isn't going to ruin anybody's travel plans, or inconvenience anybody's barbeque schedule.
I'll be leaving Sunday for Normandy. This will be the first Memorial Day I won't be going to a service in fifteen years. And I feel properly lousy about it.
Get up early. Get out early. Honor those who fell. It's the least we can do.
