These horrifying digital snapshots of the American dream in action on foreign soil are worse than anything even I could have expected. I have been in this business a long time and I have seen many staggering things, but this one is over the line.Is he serious? I always assumed Hunter liked dressing in his leathers and being led around on a dog chain by ladies.

Fear and Loathing would describe the tenor of most of Hunter S. Thompson's 'journalistic' output.

What an idiot. All flights in August are sold. Climate wise Greece is quite nice and warm in August.
For a sports writer this must be a true idiot or a paid representative of the Goodwill Games (tm).
I will let my fellow freepers know what it is like when I get there.
How one ties bashing the USA to an international sporting even is amazing. Of course it does pay to know Disney owns ESPN.

Hunter has killed a lot of brain cells since he first came on the scene.

So who does Hunter Thompson thank at night for the comfort that he can watch the Olympics from his home? If he is so ashamed of carrying a U.S. passport, I will personally buy him a one-way ticket out of the country and gladly take that passport as he leaves!

The sheer fact that this article was written by Hunter S Thompson (an over the hill and not so funny "journalist") automatically disqualifies it from further consideration.

Is he serious? No. Or at least I hope not. Hard to tell with HT - the line between the fantasy world and the real one isn't quite as well-drawn with him as it is for most of us.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, ESPN shows their bias by permitting Hunter S. Thompson to spout his politics and wanting to put a gag on Rush Limbaugh when he was an employee.
The long-dreaded 2004 Olympics in Greece will be the ultimate crossroads for sports and politics in this new and vicious century. The recent photos of cruelty at the Abu Grahaib all-american prison in Baghdad have taken care of that.
If it wasn't the photos, it would be the mere presence of George W. Bush in the White House that would be causing them to wear their antiAmericanism on their sleeves. They don't like us, Hunter. What do I care that socialists, communists, and Islamofascists don't like us? I won't be watching and would just as soon have it that we boycott the games.
They've reversed their policy on stopping the US from waving the flag when we win, but so what. What are they going to do when the terrorists strike this time? Blame the US for getting the bad guys "mad"?

Friends don't let friends vote Democrat.
Yes. The prison abuse is worse than anything Hitler's Nazis ever did. < /sarcasm >
Hunter, you know very well that man on man rape occurs every week in the US in prison (with the knowledge of the guards and administrators) and that same sex rape is worse than anything in those photos. Where is your outrage at the crimes being committed against human rights in American prisons? Oh, that's right, you'd rather whine for someone convicted on death row than someone who is being made to suffer vigilante justice while in prison.

Now I am really ashamed to carry an American passport. Then turn it in and take your drug-addled, perverted, goofy, idiotic self to whatever corner of the world will have you. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
Not even the foulest atrocities of Adolf Hitler ever shocked me so badly as these photographs did.
What a stupid thing to say.
How the hell can there be any comparison between these silly pictures of simulated torture and juvenile misdeameanors taken in the GrabaArab prison to stacks of bodies after the gas chambers were emptied, the images of mothers and children being led naked to the brink of a mass grave and there shot, the ovens, the gaunt, starved men of the camps, the..., oh hell, it's not even worth going on.
Trying to change the mind of an ass like Hunter Thompson (a wuss that got his ass whipped on a regular basis by the Hell's Angels) is not worth it.
The man is a fool.
His idiotic silliness is evident in his rantings. Too much 'shroom in his unremarkable past.

ESPN SCRUBS HUNTER S. THOMPSON BUSH BASH
Monday May 24 2004 17:50:09 ET
Hunter S. Thompson's ESPN column was scrubbed of controversy late Monday afternoon when online editors worried the famed gonzo journalist had gone too far.
In a column entitled, "Let's Go to the Olympics," Thompson went off on the Abu Ghraib prison picture scandal, exclaiming: "Not even the foulest atrocities of Adolf Hitler ever shocked me so badly as these [Abu Ghraib] photographs did."
But after being linked to the DRUDGE REPORT, a top editor demanded the sentence be immediately edited --without Thompson's okay, according to an ESPN.com staffer.
"Hunter can go too far sometimes," the Bristol-based ESPN employee told the DRUDGE REPORT.
The cleansed paragraph now reads:
"These horrifying digital snapshots of the American dream in action on foreign soil are worse than anything even I could have expected. I have been in this business a long time and I have seen many staggering things, but this one is over the line.
As with the original, Thompson still concludes with the thought: "Now I am really ashamed to carry an American passport."
Developing...
