Well, it picks up right where the last one left off, both in terms of the thoroughly modern Marty courtship between the titular swamp ogre and Princess Fiona, and in terms of Dreamworks' attempt to turn random, satire-devoid pop cultural references into the new language of fairy tales. (The opening montage "zings" Lord of the Rings and Spider-Man; the main story line is mostly Meet the Parents.) Unfortunately for the studio, its new creation is at least six months behind the curve: The de rigueur digs at Disney come well after Pixar's emancipation, while the jabs at metrosexuality are too lame to be redeemed by the cannily queer voice-casting of Rupert Everett and Jennifer Saunders. (Whether its presence in competition at Cannes will allow the fest to atone for having offended conservative reviewers last year remains to be seen.) Speaking of gentrified minorities, Eddie Murphy's Donkey is still the studio system's highest profile "house negro" besides P. Diddy's umbrella-swinging manservant/dresser/minstrel Farnsworth Bentley. And though the character's Aunt Jemima-esque waffle-baking was generally accorded a blasé reception the first time around, I'd love to see even the most skeptical of critics try to ignore the sequel's subtext: Donkey taking a swig of "happily ever after" potion in order to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming--I sh&$? you not--a snow-white stallion.
So if Eddie Murphy turned into a Black stallion it would have been okay?
Maybe it's a jab at Jacko.
Shrek 2: Racist Subtext?
Star Wars IV: Racist Subtext?
Star Wars V: Racist Subtext?
Star Wars VI: Racist Subtext?
Star Wars I: Racist Subtext?
Star Wars II: Racist Subtext?
True Lies: Racist Subtext? (Muslim terrorists would NEVER attack America!)
Yawn.
I felt that Murphy's performance in the original was way too reminiscent of Mantan Moreland's Birmingham Brown in the old Charlie Chan movies. (this is not intended as insult to Moreland, a brilliant comedian whose developed his original routine specifically for the black audience)
Some people just need to get a life.
Very funny movie. As good as the first.
Oh, geez. First the fag columnist using this movie to push for Gay Marriages, and now this crap?
Give me a break.
I'm willing to bet that every black actor in this racist CARTOON are taking that prejudice all the way to the bank.
Really, now, would Sean Combs or Eddie Murphy allow themselves to play the house negro in anything?
I thought Shrek 2 was anti-people who look like Ernest Borgnine. (That's who Shrek looked like to me after the Sexy potion.)
Yeah... Mr. Critic forgot that in faerie tales, the hero always rode a shining, white stallion. But they were ARABIAN stallions, and everyone knows (wink-wink) that Bush's war "against" "ARABS" is a war against PEOPLE OF COLOR, so we must remember that shining, white stallions are NOT officially "white" even though they are white in color. Ya know, kinda like Michael Jackson since he hired the "right" defense attorneys.

For $10 million? You could call me pretty much anything.
Holy cow! BOYCOTT!!!
; )

Eat me!
Hey, that's not bad! You could be a leftist intellectual critic yourself!
Oh, and by the way, don't make the mistake of leaving before all the credits are done or else you'll miss a little scene at the end. My wife and I lingered and were the only ones in our show who actually saw it.
There is a good Eddie Murphy transsexual joke here somewhere..
Could someone explain the whole Muffin Man thing? I did not understand that. The little girl in the next row started shrieking.
"Ain't gonna fall for no bananna in my tailpipe"
