Rumsfeld bans camera phones in Iraq: report

Sun May 23, 7:17 AM ET Add Technology - AFP to My Yahoo!

LONDON (AFP) - Cellphones fitted with digital cameras have been banned in US army installations in Iraq (news - web sites) on orders from Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, a business newspaper reported.

Missed Tech Tuesday? Europe and Japan get all the hot new technology first. Here's a look at the pipeline of future tech -- plus some gadgets that didn't travel well and a wishlist of cool things.

Quoting a Pentagon (news - web sites) source, The Business newspaper said the US Defense Department believes that some of the damning photos of US soldiers abusing Iraqis at Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad were taken with camera phones.

"Digital cameras, camcorders and cellphones with cameras have been prohibited in military compounds in Iraq," it said, adding that a "total ban throughout the US military" is in the works.

Disturbing new photos of Iraqi prisoner abuse, which the US government had reportedly tried to keep hidden, were published Friday in the Washington Post newspaper.

The photos emerged along with details of testimony from inmates at Abu Ghraib who said they were sexually molested by female soldiers, beaten, sodomized and forced to eat food from toilets.

Well, I see Rumsfeld has seen my FR posts. :)

It should have been the rule from the beginning, and by doing so, could have avoided this silly, politically volatile, episode.

...beaten, sodomized and forced to eat food from toilets.

Sounds like a downtown San Francisco buffet after the "PRIDE" march.

This is a sorry plan which will backfire.

Good idea, bad timing. Camera phones should not ba allowed into a war zone, a military base, or any other sensitive government facitily. However, the timing of the order will make it look like he's just trying to keep any other photos of abuse from leaking out.

One has to wonder: Why wasn't this order in force from the beginning of the war?

Why would it backfire? Even before the digital age, cameras were not permitted in high security areas or prisons. They usually post something at the front gates.

Is there a reference on this story? Brit Hume said yesterday that it was a joke.

Backfire how?  By making it harder for spies to pass real-time photos of troop dispositions?

We don't even allow these cameras in the private club I work for.
