Let's put it this way. The General who said more troops would be required was canned. The budget man who said it would cost 200 billion was canned. Those who told the President we would be greeted with flowers and the oil wells would gush cash to pay for the war are still around. Why?

You must understand their values and beliefs are based upon theocratic totalitarianism which does not permit dissention or the presence of others who live freely from their will.
Simply by being here we are forcing their religious and cultural ideology to confront reality and modernize or lose control of their followers. It is a pragmatic equation: attack Coalition forces and die or accept the existence of other peoples and religions. The hard-line mullahs, war lords, Ba'athists and tribal leaders do not like our presence because it weakens the control they have over people in their areas. They realize if people have a choice many will bolt from 6th century religious and political serfdom.
Democracy may be a long way off but freedom is good enough for now.
Consider an alternative: the West pulls out of Iraq (there's >20 nations here) then Pakistan gives nuclear weapons to Islamic terrorists. Then you lose the civilization you're accostomed to. They have yet to accept the existence of the West, its freedoms and liberties. They can attack us over here, or they can attack us back there. Which would you prefer?
