Ted Turner's environmental hypocrisy
WorldNetDaily ^ | 5/18/04 | Steve Marr

Ted Turner has been in the forefront of promoting extreme environmental causes, crusading relentlessly to stop oil drilling on public land in Colorado and on the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.

Meanwhile, Ted is padding his pockets with oil money, money obtained from large-scale leases on his Vermejo Park Ranch in New Mexico. According to the Wall Street Journal, Turner now earns over 6 million a year from oil royalties, and new wells are being drilled on his ranch ever year. Ted's actions are speaking louder than his words!

Actually, Ted's drilling agreement with El Paso Gas demonstrates that oil can be extracted without devastating the environment. Buffalo and elk roam freely and the wells are well hidden, while an estimated 2.5 billion dollars of oil and gas is extracted.

However, Turner said in an interview in Emagazine, "My philosophy of environmental management is to just leave the environment alone and try to get the introduced species out of there." He added, "I'm in favor of the environment being maintained and persevered in as much of its intact state as possible."

Apparently, Ted is quick to compromise his philosophy when millions of dollars—his dollars—are at stake.

As gasoline and natural gas prices escalate, we need to tap new sources of energy within the US. And as Ted has demonstrated on his own land, energy can and should be extracted safely.

This summer when you are paying more at the pump, remember that prices could and should have been kept down by responsibly opening up more drilling. Also, remember the six million dollars a year that Ted has to help him endure the current high prices.

He's not a hypocrite, he's a savvy businessman.

He's using his considerable leverage in speaking out against the ANWR and Colorado public lands drilling to insure that his oil leases return as high a profit as possible, to hell with the rest of America.

It's just like the huge lumber companies on the Pacific coast who push environmental regulations which raise the barrier of entry for small loggers who'd compete with them.

He is a hypocrite because he wants to make the rules for everyone else but he doesn't want to follow them himself.
