Reporters Tim Russert, Matthew Cooper [TIME] Subpoenaed in CIA Leak... Developing...
NBC, fighting move, says journalist did not receive informationMSNBC and NBC News
Updated: 8:45 p.m. ET May 21, 2004WASHINGTON - NBC News said Friday night that it would oppose a subpoena issued to Washington bureau chief Tim Russert by the federal grand jury investigating the leak of the identity of an undercover CIA operative last year.
Russert, the moderator of NBCs Meet the Press, is the first journalist known to have been subpoenaed in the investigation, which the Justice Department opened after syndicated columnist Robert Novak reported in July that Valerie Plame, the wife of a former ambassador who criticized President Bushs justification for going to war in Iraq, worked for the agency.

SUBPOENA IN C.I.A. DISCLOSURE
A grand jury has subpoenaed a reporter for Time magazine, Matthew Cooper, in its inquiry into whether someone in the Bush administration disclosed the identity of a C.I.A. officer. Robert Novak, the syndicated columnist, first published the name of the officer, Valerie Plame. Time reported that government officials had identified Ms. Plame to it in interviews in an apparently in an effort to discredit her husband in a political dispute. Robin Bierstedt, deputy general counsel of Time Inc., said the magazine protected its sources and would move to quash the subpoena. Adam Liptak (NYT)
Both Valerie and Joe Wilson are phony liars! They are much more important in their own minds than to the rest of the country (who could care less).
The press has no legal standing to squash any subpoena of this nature.
Untrue.
Yes they do. It has been litigated more than once in the court under 1st amendment precedents.
Interesting.
First Amendment I don't think applies when the subject is about "CIA Leaks". Tim's 1st Amendment right is not being infringed.
Regardless I am sure Timmy Boy thinks it is "INAPPROPRIATE".
And they loose the litigation. There is no protected speach between a reporter and a source. No matter what the press tells you. The Supreme Court has recognized the arguments made by the press as to its watchdog role in society, but it has not gone so far as to grant a reporter-source privilege.
I think I spoke too soon. Reporters would not be found in contempt all the time if it was settled law. I stand corrected.
(Both Valerie and Joe Wilson are phony liars! They are much more important in their own minds than to the rest of the country (who could care less).)
I would like to buy them for what their worth and sell them for what they think they're worth.
Joe Wilson wants to be a big time player in the fall election. He is so blinded by ego he fails to see he is a non-issue.
I'm no legal beagle so does a grand jury have to have probable cause to issue a subpoena?
I have no idea. I'm as far from an attorney as you can get. lol!
Whatever forthwith means.
Not denying that. Afterall, he's in the lamestream press. Senators are not to be leaking sensitive info (remember Senator Leahy?), you and I couldn't either, so why should reporters like Timmy get a pass under the guise of "First Amendment Rights"? That's what I don't understand.
It's absolutely precious how Joe Wilson's talking point gets regurgitated. It is too much to ask how it is "apparent" there was an effort to discredit her husband and the means was the "outing" of Plame.
I didn't think that was correct either...that these were the first subpoenas for journalists.
In fact, didn't Jeff Gannon get subpoenaed, as just one example?
