Intelligence gathered since the bayonet charge suggests it shocked the militia fighters, who expected the outnumbered Scots to flee.

I wonder whether it was the bayonets or the bagpipes which caused them to flee?

Bagpipes and Scots have been scaring the enemy for generations. Once a year they parade through my church (Presbyterian, naturally). When the pipe organ joins in, it makes your hair stand on end. Awesome!

Maybe it was the fear of being fed haggis if they were taken prisoner. :=)
