This is OUTRAGEOUS!! Their living conditions were right out of the 18th century!!! It's HORRIBLE!! That poor child was been denied the basic needs of life. Can you imagine growing up under such conditions? No MTV. No Britney Spears. No pizza. No Gameboy. No computer. No internet. No pornographic spam. Where was George Bush when this child was being left behind?

OH! THE HUMANITY!!!

</sarcasm>

But seriously...

Aside from the fact that they were squatting on public land, why are the authorities messing with these people? Since when does an Aussie jogger getting his knickers in a bunch constitute a cause for alarm? Heaven forbid this guy should ever travel down to rural Baja.

I can understand the involvement of the police in evicting these people (and I support that decision...transients shouldn't be able to just "build a house" in the middle of a park), but it sounds like everything beyond that was driven by this officers caring about their well being. They got them out of the dirt-floored lean-to and into a proper home and even got him a job. This, IMO, is what Christian charity is all about. A hand up, not a handout.

She has a loving caring nurturing parent, no doubt about that. I find it interesting that they would automatically check her for sexual abuse. Not every father alone with his young daughter is a pervert.

Probably the primary thing missing in this childs life is a total lack of interaction with her peers. Yet how fortunate she is to have such a parent as her father.

No pizza.

I didn't see that in the article. ;>)If the Sgt. can provide as well as he has with darn near nothing to live on, I suspect that he could provide a hearth-side pizza (pizza is poverty food). If not, I'm open to teaching him how. ;>)

The reason the child is so smart is that she hasn't been exposed to TV for the last 4 years. Dan Rather damages brain cells.

Exactly my thoughts on the situation.

Police persuaded them to leave the camp, promising help them find food and shelter.

Do you have any idea how inane this sentence sounds?
