I have faith in the values her father instilled in her. She's a good person I hope you are correct.
I however remember with dread the pressures to conform that can be brought to bare in junior high school.
Then there is the degeneracy of the media and entertainment industry.
It was incredibly difficult for me to stay apart from the degenerate society I lived in when I was in junior high 30 years ago. The ridicule that I endured was barely tolerable.
I do not imagine things have improved.
This young lady will have things even more difficult because she is even more different having been isolated from the world for four years.
If the father is wise and can manage it I would suggest he continue to home school.

My grandmother wouldn't have thought the conditions so unacceptableNeither would mine. Her family lived in a dugout for a while.

I hope Frank and Ruthie get a good agent because there is going to be a book or two and maybe a movie. Ruthie won't have to worry about a College Fund if they do it right.

until shown otherwise, I will take the story as reported and not necessarily feel that there is something moreWhen was the last time the media reported something like this as good? They have something up their sleeve.

Since she tested at 12th grade level already, she may just go straight to college and skip high school. Perhaps that's why a college fund has been set up for her.
To: Bloody Sam Roberts
"You must conform. You will be assimilated. You must conform. You will be assimilated. You must conf..." That's what the college fund is for. Should start a competing fund to give her if she DOESN'T GO TO COLLEGE!!! Let her start her own business.

Should start a competing fund to give her if she DOESN'T GO TO COLLEGE!!! Let her start her own business. Why not do both? With college paid for (assuming the fund grows large enough) her and dad can save up their money and start a business after she graduates from business school.

The pair appeared clean, well-fed and healthy, Barkley said, and the girl was well-spoken beyond her years. Frank, a devout Christian, said he taught his daughter using the old encyclopedias.

What was so clear was that their living conditions were unacceptable...
Interesting evaluation. This makes the libertarian in me (minus the living on public land part) come out and simply ask, "Why do you think it's your business, Mr. Policeman?" If they can do it to a family living in the forest, they can do it to a family living in a house on Main Street - come in on a concerned call and evaluate and then judge our living conditions as either acceptable or unacceptable. Maybe I'm just too used to things like this ending the wrong way.

Officials said the girl, who would be normally in 7th grade, is at a 12th grade equivalency. A sparkling testimony to the incredibly expensive taxpayer-funded educational system ... a father with a set of encyclopedias, living in a tent in the woods, can outpace educational professionals in the education of his daughter.
I hope things turn out well for these two.

Is there ONE person out there who would actually like to see his child living under these circumstances? The father chose the lesser of two evils and made the best of it. What else could he have done ?
Is there ONE person out there who thinks this is a rational response to drugs and sex?
yes, and I bet there are more on FR than me that do.
Or is it possible (if even true) that there is more to the story?
Anything is possible, the question is is it likely. I would say no based on the fact that (for once) I read the entire story and it didn't strike me that way.
