I'm not sure he was clear on why we couldn't respond to incoming mortar fire. I can't imagine any commander allowing this . . . unless they think that if it's 1-2 rounds and the chances of finding a fire location in the dark is just negigible, and may, in fact, cost several soldiers to go out and do this.

I'm not sure he meant that rules of engagement have changed DUE TO media interference IN THIS CASE.

Now, he was clear that on the street, the presence of al-=Jazeera and other cameras has had a negative effect.

IF we're knee-jerking the rules of engagement because of the freakin' media, then this will be another VietNam...and we'll lose.

I believe that we can locate the location of the firing mortar using radar. There is no need to visually spot the piece.
