May 19, 2004

By Joo Yong-joong

Kim Ki-sam(age:39), the former agent of NIS(S. Korean intelligence agency) who exposed (political) scandals of Kim Dae-jung government via Internet, and his family reportedly filed for a political asylum on 18th (of May, 2004) at the New Jersey Asylum Office of Dept. of Homeland Security. Such a request for the political asylum by a former intelligence agent is quire rare, which is expected to create a diplomatic row between S. Korea and America.

Mr. Kim has been taking steps for the asylum since last December. In his statement submitted to the (New Jersey) office last March, "Due to my political views, I would be subject to (political)persecution. Therefore, I apply for the asylum."

He circulated articles via Internet, in which he first publicly exposed the so-called "Cash-for-summit" scandal and the infiltration of his intelligence agency by suspected high-level N. Korean moles. His article was also featured on Wall Street Journal in English. His accusation was a trigger who led to the investigation into the Kim Dae-jung government's illegal secret cash payment of more than $200 million to N. Korean leader Kim Jong-il's personal bank accounts, in exchange for securing the inter-Korean summit in 2000.
