Asad Shaikh and nine other fourth-graders sat in a line cross-legged, sweating and nervously darting their eyes between a line of judges and the woman seated before them.
Asad, who attends the Universal Academy of Florida in Tampa, had traveled almost five hours to participate in the third annual Islamic Inter-School Spelling Bee, hosted this year at the Islamic Center of South Florida in Pompano Beach.

Do girls compete against boys? Muslims tend to be obsessed with keeping the sexes separate. Plus, it wouldn't do little Muhammed's ego much good if he was beaten by a mere lowly female.
Well, at least they let the girls compete. I wonder if they were in the same room.
Does a girl have to spell two words for every boy's word, or half a word?
No infidels were allowed to participate in this "sacred" event.
