Cosby, Saying the Darndest Things
Bill Cosby was anything but politically correct in his remarks Monday night at a Constitution Hall bash commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision. To astonishment, laughter and applause, Cosby mocked everything from urban fashion to black spending and speaking habits.
Bill Cosby, ready to let off steam. (Lawrence Jackson - AP)
"Ladies and gentlemen, the lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal," he declared. "These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids -- $500 sneakers for what? And won't spend $200 for 'Hooked on Phonics.' . . .
"They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English," he exclaimed. "I can't even talk the way these people talk: 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' . . . And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk. . . . Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. . . . You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth!"
The Post's Hamil Harris reports that Cosby also turned his wrath to "the incarcerated," saying: "These are not political criminals. These are people going around stealing Coca-Cola. People getting shot in the back of the head over a piece of pound cake and then we run out and we are outraged, [saying] 'The cops shouldn't have shot him.' What the hell was he doing with the pound cake in his hand?"
When Cosby finally concluded, Howard University President H. Patrick Swygert, NAACP President Kweisi Mfume and NAACP legal defense fund head Theodore Shaw came to the podium looking stone-faced. Shaw told the crowd that most people on welfare are not African American, and many of the problems his organization has addressed in the black community were not self-inflicted.

Or stealing Jello Pudding. (Nice ad placement Bill, how much did Coke pay you for that?)
He should've gotten a standing ovation. But I don't see it mentioned.....surprise.
I just hope Lara doesn't starve to death before November.
That would be Dr. Bill Cosby, by the way. Ph. D. in Education, and earned, not honorary.
Quite true that most people on welfare are not black. What's also true is that blacks have a much higher percentage of their population on welfare than other races, and I believe they are also disproportionately represented in "Want fries with that" jobs. And anyone who thinks speaking, reading, and writing proper English and showing up to work on time is "acting white" and is to be despised is going to stay that way.
People are sometimes too complex to fit in the boxes we want them to stay in. His words here are funny and true and very needed from him. I'll applaud it... That doesn't mean I own any of his other work I might not like!
uh oh......looks like Cosby ain't black anymore.......
Precisely. He went to college, earned his degrees, worked hard to achieve what he has, and most likely is disgusted by the spectre of black youth who refuse to take advantage of the opportunities afforded them, and fail to use proper English or to make something of themselves.
The Cosby Show was one of the best role models ever for a black family. Bill has some balls saying that stuff in front of that crowd.
I'm not complaining, I generally like Cosby, but did you know his Ph.D. thesis was basically using Fat Albert to teach kids?
You must not have been around the day he blamed white prejudice for the murder of his son by an illegal alien.
Kudos to Bill Cosby! Someone needs to point out the self-destructive attitudes in the black community, and a white guy can't do it. Cosby has always stood for excellence, even if he is a liberal. I'm convinced that his portrayal of Dr. Huxtable on NBC was a not-so-subtle message to American blacks that they should aspire to success and excellence in this country.
End of the lead paragraph ..
To astonishment, laughter and applause, Cosby mocked everything from urban fashion to black spending and speaking habits.
Close enough for me.
Even though most of the time it appears he's not "right" on target.....
No NO NO!! That's hooked on EBONICS!
"Tell Bill I said to have a Coke and a smile and to shut the F up." - Richard Pryor to Eddie Murphy.
Besides it was Richard Pryor who said "I've been to penitentiaries, and all I can say is, 'Thank God, we've got penitentiaries.'"
We'll never know the real truth, but Cosby later said that he never chastised Eddie about "filth," rather he chastised Eddie about his attitude towards the audience when he was "off" one night. Cosby said Eddie went off on the audience saying something like, "screw you people...I make millions of dollars...blah blah blah."
Anyway, that was Cosby's version.
"Besides it was Richard Pryor who said "I've been to penitentiaries, and all I can say is, 'Thank God, we've got penitentiaries.'""
LOL, that was a great bit.
