One of my favorites is "he's a mess!" usually said with tolerant laughter, meaning the person so described is a cut-up, funny or michievious.

That's a common way to politely thank someone for a compliment, such as,

"Your son is so polite and smart,"

Proper reply is "Oh, he's a mess," with a smile.
