When I first moved to NC people would ask me where I was from. I would say New York. Better than 90% of those who asked me would respond, "what part of the city?"
Their bewildermint upon learning I was not from the city would lead to a geography lesson.
Understood. Actually, I was once standing in front of the house I was raised in, and a friend of a friend (who didn't know me) asked me where I was from. I was glad he didn't detect a strong "tri-state area" accent. Although when I speak to friends in Minnesota, I can hear my accent more. CHAWklit ice cream!
