We've yet to actually handle any of these cases. The 9/11 guys are all dead. None of the head guys have been caught. All we have done with anyone is "detain" them.

So we haven't tried this. All we have done is capture and hold. What we have done doesn't work, and, frankly, doesn't even conform to what we say our country is all about. I accept it as necessary because the detainees are actually prisoners of war. These men are a different class.

Like it or not, these guys are criminals, and if we are serious about what the Founding Fathers said about the nature of man and rights, we need to handle criminals properly. If we just kill them or, as this thread has promoted many times, torture them to death (on tape no less), we are reinforcing the idea that we are no better than they are. If that is the case, we have no right to be outraged when they act like animals.

They need to be punished for their action, which includes execution. But brutal summary executions will have only a short-term impact.

This is going to be a very ugly, ugly war that may last a generation or longer. What will make us better than them is our ability to kill them more efficiently and in greater number than they can kill us.
