I read a comment on this from a commander somewhere talking about the lack of armored humvees saying that they were never intended to be "on the front lines". And that since in this war everywhere is a front line many vehicles are having to attempt things they were never meant for.

One would surely hope the problem is being addressed.

The Humvee was supposed to be a replacement for the jeep. You never heard of the jeep being armored. Why? Because it wasn't meant to be a "front lines" vehicle.

The Bradley Fighting Vehicle is supposed to be transporting troops in fire zones.

Someone has got to bring this 'lack of armored vehicles' brouhaha into perspective. In a guerilla war you don't have a 'front line' so what is the answer--transport all troops at all times in tanks and Bradleys?

Then they should start comandeering all the Brinks trucks that come off the line and sending them to Iraq. I can't believe that this man's army doesn't have a GI armored car.

Armored HMMWVs are relative slugs in moving, lose most of their off-road ability, and wear out quickly as they trash their own suspension. The armor also drastically reduces the (cargo and troops) carrying capacity of the vehicle.

One of the documents I saw here on FR showed the armored version of the HMMWV having a 0-50 of a shade under 18 seconds.
