Blix wants more information about sarin-filled roadside bomb

Stockholm, Sweden-AP --

He wants to know more. Former U-N weapons inspector Hans Blix is taking a wait-and-see approach, after news that a roadside bomb containing sarin exploded in Iraq.

Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt says the explosion occurred a couple of days ago. And he said he believes the insurgents who set the bomb didn't know it contained sarin. But Blix says it's too soon to determine if the shell was from the past or part of a stockpile of weapons of mass destruction.Blix reported before the beginning of the war in Iraq that his teams were unable to locate proof of deadly weapons. But his inspectors did find 16 warheads that were tagged as being used for containing sarin. They were empty.

There is something odd about the sentiments being expressed in this thread. Would the posters prefer to think that the report is beyond dispute and that U.S. troops can expect to be confronted with sarin? Surely we should all hope Blix is right, and that U.S. troops, already beleaguered with hazards galore, will not have yet another lethal threat to contend with! The U.S. military has been wrong about so many things, why would anyone not be prepared, for realistic reasons, to consider that this may be one more mistaken preliminary report about sarin. All earlier reports of this kind, maybe ten or twenty in the past year, have been followed, a week or two later, by a final conclusion that the initial reports were erroneous. I'd welcome independent verification of the finding in the hope that this would heighten assurances from the U.S. military that protection against this threat was being redoubled for U.S. troops in the field.

You don't want to do that. He may declare it a weapon. :)

News reports say that it's been certified to be nerve gas, plus some of the people who have come in contact with it show signs of nerve gas exposure.

I thought Blix was replaced by another clueless jerk.

Regardless, when these ass-breaths are referred to as "weapons inspectors;" ahhh, doesn't a weapon need to be FOUND - BEFORE it can be "inspected."

"I'm a weapons inspector. Show me the weapon, and I will inspect it."

Politicians can't even get their thoughts and grammar straight. (This has been bothering me for years).

"Will Blix ever admit Iraq was playing hide & seek with the WMD's from the UN inspectors."

Or that he was part of that game?

I think the man was paid off.

So, I guess the threshold is going to be raised with each discovery, huh?

It might be postulated that a booby-trapped shell is a shell whose owner lacks access to a gun that can fire it. By the transitive property of logic that means said owner has access to a cache of shells without an artillery piece.

Which means it is entirely possible a bunch of guys are running around with this crap in trunks of cars, eventually to be wired up and ready to go.

It's easier to find and deal with three punks with a big gun, bit harder, I assume, a few more with loose shells taken out of a hidden bunker.

Blix, if he were sincere, or didn't have the logical inquiry skills of an insect, would be more concerned about this development than this response.

As an aside, nothing happens without a reason. A roadside bomb today, something planted in front of a hotel tomorrow. These bastards field test the old-fashioned way--they've proven that time and again.

I guess he's never actually seen any himself. Maybe if they give him the information, he'll know what he's looking for next time.

Does Blix honestly believe that someone could "lose track" of something filled with Sarin? Saddam had them, we knew he had them, everyone knew he had them. and now we HAVE one.

Not with both hands, he can't.

Actually when you think about it you have to grant Blix that minor point. Saddam obviously did at one point have thousands of these weapons. The russians can't even hold onto their nuclear stockpile - while I am sure Saddam did have WMD, my belief is that if he buried/shipped to syria/did whatever with most of them, there were bound to be a few leftovers that went astray in the chaos. Especially items like this that aren't dangerous until actually fired from the gun. In fact I'm surprised no more than this have shown up so far.
