Works by Plato and Socrates and many others were later destroyed in a fire. I've been under the impression that Socrates left no writings. If so, that name should have been Aristotle, some of whose works are known to have been lost.

...Socrates left no writings.... yes, but many of his lectures and sayings were written down by his students and thus preserved for posterity. Among the most famous were his last words:
"I drank what?"
