Wonder who introduced the toxin to the lake?? Could it be........................... Is this in the general region where all those deer or elk were dying during the winter?

Your skepticism is well deserved. There are bluegreen algae that produce neurotoxins, but I've never seen any that could produce that type of response that quickly. There have been people that have died from toxic algae, but the circumstances were such that they were given large doses of the neurotoxins when the water was used for dialysis.

As far as I know, what is described in this article is impossible as a result of any know freshwater algae.

There are some saltwater forms that produce a VERY potent nuerotoxin that can kill you if you even breath the air near a large bloom, but they are marine forms of algae, not freshwater.
