N.J. STATE POLICE TRAIN TO DETECT SUICIDE BOMBERS

Training Will Begin Next Month

TRENTON, N.J. -- State police next month will begin training how to detect suicide bombers, according to a published report.

Law enforcement sources said there have not been any specific threats to New Jersey, The Express-Times of Easton, Pa., reported in Saturday's editions.

But Roger Shatzkin, a spokesman for the state Office of Counterterrorism, told the newspaper that such an attack is "viewed as a sort of a next logical threat."

Since the Madrid bombings, transit officials and state police have been keeping a close eye on transportation systems.

"We're dealing with an international issue, and we look at what is going on around the world. We assume that anything can happen here, and we prepare," Shatzkin said.

Starting next month and lasting until August, state police will learn how to spot suicide bombers, said state police Lt. Al Della Fave. He said experts will teach how to make the detections.

"This is a horrific type of scene to respond to, and we want (personnel) to know in advance," he said.

The FBI said tip-offs to suicide bombers include people wearing unseasonably warm jackets and people smelling of chemicals.
