I noticed the moon as well last night, not too high above the horizon and a nice crescent.

The moon is very important to Islam (lunar calendar), but they do not worship a moon god. They worship the same "God" as all Abrahamic religions.

There was a new moon on the 18th of May so we are still in the first cycle of the new moon (hence the nice crescent). Rabi al-Thani (the fourth month of the Islamic Calendar) began either Thursday or Friday, depending on the moon. I suppose it is possible that there were celebrations surrounding the beginning of the month? I don't believe there are any major "eids/holiday's" in the current month though.

Muslims don't celebrate the beginning of a new month.

I'l be more inclined to think it might be something associated with the end of the school year - perhaps something similar to a baccalaureate service for those graduating this year. I'm not sure when school gets out in that part of the country, but most colleges and universities have already had graduation.
