I think Sam makes these things up. Sam, Dan Rather, and Andy Rooney....all old shmucks who make things up.

The saying that Donaldson butchered is actually..."God watches over fools, Drunks, and little children". My Mom used to tell me that all the time. I never knew whether she was referring to me as a fool or a little child.

Me either but, its an interesting insight into his way of thinking. Present your bias along with some alleged, long accepted "old saying" and then throw your worthless bias in at the end. Soemhow I dont imaging him making something up like:

You know the old saying, God protects fools, drunks and the United States of America. Dont forget to thank Him for that today.

The old saying is 'Fate protects fools, little children and ships named Enterprise'. (said after the USS Enterprise was delayed from arriving at Pearl Harbour in time to get sunk)
