One purely speculative theory of mine is this:
Berg was in Iraq with the comm tower non-job for cover-for-action to travel around odd places.

His real mission was to act as a messenger, trying to become a go-between from Int'l A.N.S.W.E.R. to Al Queda. I mean, ANSWER can't exactly just pick up a phone to call Al Queda. To communicate with them, you have to GO to where they ARE, and fish around dropping hints, until you're picked up.

That's when you tell them the glorious news: you have come from a group "allied in the struggle against the Western imperialists" yadda yadda. You have a message, and an offer to coordinate activities, or perhaps hints on how to tweak their operations for the best effect, IOW, what and when to pull an operation which will result in the defeat of George W. Bush in November.

You expect to be treated fairly well, perhaps roughed up like the fake Japanese hostages/peace activists. After all, you can't talk to Al Queda, and just walk away like nothing happened.

But they saw the Jewish name Berg, and the Israeli passport stamp, and that trumped his ANSWER credentials. When the AG Prison scandal hit the papers.... Nick went on to serve a higher Al Queda purpose: human sacrifice on film.

That's why Daddy Berg (Mr. ANSWER) said "They killed their best friend."

The above is pure speculation on my part.

One other thought to throw into the pot.

If Nick Berg so easily gave his email password, who's to say the emails from Iraq to his family were actually written by Nick? Hmmmmmm?

Your SWAG below sound plausible enough to be a chapter in a new book about the enemies within:

Your theories are always so believable. You should write books! :)

"Pure speculation", but a far more coherent and plausible explanation than "a communications tower entrepreneur prospecting for business in an active combat zone". Especially in view of the fact that daddy is a card carrying subversive. A lot of things about this really reek.

Snippy and I were discussing this possibility too.

It may not be that far fetched. He may not have known he was going to be killed, thinking only he was doing a "propaganda film" I found it strange that after being in captivity, although you'd expect a beard, that he had a neatly trimmed type of beard that is common to the Islamic men.

Something about all this doesn't pass the smell test.

"They killed thier best friend." IS a very strange thing to say. I think your theory is plausible. and Nick pretends to be a Bush/WOT supporter so he won't be under suspicion in Iraq...

Correct, sir. I believe you have nailed it. After all the information released, so far, I have come to the same conculsion. This kid wasn’t so ‘innocent’ as his Daddy wants us to believe. Tragic consequences. Stupid liberals.

Sad.

"The above is pure speculation on my part."

Your theory is perfectly plausible, and fits ALL the facts as well as anything. It also could explain the Moussoui/e-mail angle, maybe he actually was trying to help Moussoui out, and was fully aware of his role as a subversive, if not of his intended terrorism.

There's something a little pat in the way the dad says:My son was a Bush/War supporter. If you were the dad, wouldn't you add something like: even though I told him he was crazy/wrong.?

And there is a complete precedent for this in the Pearl murder. I'm not saying Pearl was a terrorist sympathizer, but he certainly was only after "the story", I don't think he was some CIA op. I'm not saying Berg was a terrorist sympathizer either, he may well have been another mis-guided "peace" activist. I'm fairly well convinced that he had no legitimate business interests in Iraq. I heard that those Halliburton truck drivers are making $8,000- a month, TAX FREE! That shows you just how dangerous it really is over there. Not the type of place to just go dropping off your business cards with potential customers.

As I have said before, I hope our Fbi, etc are watching Ramsay Clark, Medea Benjamin, Brian Becker and their lieutenants 24/7.

There is no way that they have stopped their anti-American activities. I have always thought they would be interacting with Al-Queda to destroy our country.
