Reality check: it is virtually impossible to obtain such technical work as installing radio towers without a Professional Engineering license, let alone not having a college degree!

That is true. Plus, you gotta have boatloads of insurance as one slip of a wrench and the whole tower could crumble to the ground.

Nobody is going to leave a communications tower in the hands of a freelance 26 year old with questionable credentials and no Engineering license. Not even in Iraq.

This is what we were discussing over dinner. What sort of work was he supposed to have been doing? Lots of questions.

Does anyone just go to Iraq looking for work, without having anything lined up ahead of time, or without being contracted to work with other people? Why would he cruise around at night looking for work? What kind of tower work can be done by one man?

There was a post on FR quoting others staying at the same hotel in Baghdad. It seems he didn't so much design towers etc as climb them and service antennas etc on the top. One guy said Berg would walk around with a safety belt on. After the war there would probably be a need for some climbers. Still, he was at best very naive and certainly didn't deserve such an awful fate.

Why not???? At least 45% of the people (that are allowed to vote) in this country are going to vote for Flipflop Kerry. Anything is possible.

My firm does cellular tower work, and, at least here in the states, there are lots of hoops to jump through on the engineering end, not to mention permitting. There are Autocad/Inventor plug ins that make the design as simple as plugging in heights and wind loads, but you still need some solid engineering knowledge to get things right.

Thank goodness someone is saying what I have been thinking. I really doubted anyone would hire some freelancer to do this kind of work. WHAT was this kid with radical left wing ties doing wandering about Iraq by himself?? NONE of it makes any sense to me. Interesting about the email account as well.
