I'd prefer to think he was a real spy and got caught.
An earlier poster pointed out the improbability of the CIA sending a light-skinned Jewish guy into Iraq as a spy. On the other hand, they DID send Joseph Wilson to Niger . . .

Actually the CIA didn't send Wilson to Niger.
Plame's boss Foley, sent Wilson there without any authorization from above. The first that Tenant knew about Wilson in Niger was when he saw the summary of what probably didn't happen from Wilson's unauthorized visit.
In August, Foley, resigned suddenly from the CIA. Foley is the connection, and he ain't with the CIA any more.
