SACRAMENTO (AP) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has ordered a review of state property and the way it's managed, saying the current system is disjointed. The Republican governor issued an executive order on Wednesday directing state departments and agencies to catalogue property they control, evaluate the need to keep that property and report any property they consider surplus.
Schwarzenegger said he wanted officials to identify "potentially high-value urban properties" owned by the state that may "warrant realignment or disposal."
He also directed the Department of General Services and two other agencies to recommend ways to improve the management of state holdings.
The executive order followed a series of reports by the Oakland Tribune, that found the state owned properties ranging from an Oakland golf course, a San Rafael strip mall and a parcel in Tahiti. The state owns 2,000 individual properties, totaling more than 2.5 million acres, and more than 19,000 buildings, the Tribune reported.
Republican senators had introduced legislation requiring an inventory of the state's land holdings, saying many of the parcels could be sold to offset the state's budget deficit.
