Concerning the condemning of three Cuban dissidents to prison, Castro’s latest offense in a seemingly infinite series of crimes, Richard Piatkowski, Republican candidate for the House of Representatives, 13th Congressional District, today issued the following statement:

“That hopeless despot Fidel, last tyrant of the Americas, continues to block the road to Democracy for the Cuban People. These three brave men, Rafael Corrales Alonso, Ricardo Ramos Pereira and Jose Enrique Santana Carreira – guilty only of love of country and a desire for freedom – heard the clang of cell doors slamming shut behind them. Convicted of the trumped up charges of causing a public disturbance and ‘disrespect for the figure of the president,’ sentences ranged from four to five years.

“I well understand the plight of the Cuban people. My own family in Poland suffered under the brutal totalitarian regimes of both the Nazis and the Communists. At the outbreak of World War II, my father was a Polish naval cadet. His tall ship was headed for Gdansk when Hitler’s troops invaded. As the shadow fell across Europe, America offered sanctuary. At the end of the war, the scar of Stalin’s occupation grew over Hitler’s violation; my late father never again saw his beloved Poland free.

“Faithfully waiting for nearly half a century, in their hearts, the Polish people kept alive the desire to live as a free nation. At last, the just policies put in place by Ronald Reagan and steadfastly held to by George H.W. Bush, dissolved the Soviet Empire and the chains of oppression fell away.

“Sadly, one colony from that dark Soviet age persists in our hemisphere – Castro’s Cuba. But like the Poles, the Cuban people have never lost the dream of Democracy. And through George Bush’s Initiative for a New Cuba, they shall see that vision turn into reality. I call on all to support the President’s policy for a return of liberty to Cuba.

“Viva Cuba Libre.”
