Since when are humiliations, nude photos, panties on head, etc., equivalent to "atrocities"? Hackworth probably commits some of these "atrocities" every weekend with his girlfriend.

99% of the time I agree with what you say. As someone who just through with a year hitch in Baghdad (3rd Bde. 1st AD) I have to disagree that there was a cover up or any CYA going on in reference to Abu Ghraib. The report has been out there since January. The media has known about it. They didn't discover their moral indignation at what happened until the pics came out.
These aren't garden variety thugs in Abu Ghraib. They aren't jaywalkers and shoplifters. Most of them are the same kind of brutal murderers like we've all seen today in the video of the murder of Nick Berg.
IMHO, the ONLY thing the soldiers should be punished for is the stupidity of having recorded what they did. If their tactics, as uncouth as they may be helped to save ONE american soldier, then I have no problem with what they did.
