I've also heard it said that Kerry joined the Navy -Reserves-, not the active Navy. If that is true, I think that bears specific mention. If the Guard is considered draft evasion (which I don't), then the Reserves should be also. There seem to be a number of article around the confusion of "reserves", "active reserves" and "inactive reserves".
