Well, if you're one of the big boys, you should know how to play with the big boys. You should have tame senators on your side, and fierce attack lawyers on your staff. You should be able to use your control of the media to misdirect the wrath of the peasants at your enemies.

If you can't do that, the other guys will pick your bones.

Why bother, when one can pack bags and go where the jobs your capital can provide are desired and appreciated?

A lot of wealthy expats have done exactly that, in the past. But, that can cost millions of dollars, over and above the world-wide US income tax that they also have to pay - millions of dollars that could be put to much better use earning interest or funding a company expansion.

It is my observation that the primary difference in a wealthy US citizen and a wealthy expat is no more than the individual's willingness to play that increasingly expensive game. Everyone has a financial pain threshold. If the interest rate on your credit card goes over a certain level, you will adjust, by either switching to cash or switching to a different credit card. When playing that political/media game becomes so expensive that it crosses an individual investor's financial pain threshold., that person will take his money and play a new game, in a new country. People like Donald Trump seem to enjoy that game and will probably never leave. On the other hand, people like Warren Buffett have already tired of it and left. That's just human nature. The problem is that our elected representatives seem to think that their laws can trump human nature. What arrogance!
