"Mr. Reimer committed suicide May 4. His family has not released the cause of death"

Sounds to me like the cause of death is quack medicine + people messing with his head all of his life.

A good example of why circumcision should be banned as common practice. If parents elect to circumcise that's different. Modern medicine knows there is no reason for this practice, only cultural preasure.

According to the Colapinto book, there may have been as many as 100 other circumcision-related accidents causing permanent damage to, or loss of, genitalia. It's been awhile since I've read the book, but I remember being stunned that there were so many, though that was over a few decades IIRC.

If it were female circumcision it would be banned regardless of what parents want, as it should be. Having reached the point in life at which I no longer give two hoots what people think, I have made known to anyone who asks me that I think circumcision is a barbarian practice. I have asked members of my own family how on earth they can claim to believe in an omnipotent, infallible God and yet believe that every young boy he created is in need of improvement via the knife of a surgeon. There is NO justification for male circumcision.

In general I agree. Circumcision as done by Orthodox Jewish rabbis (the "mohel") doesn't seem to produce these horrific accidents, probably because the mohel uses a very sharp knife, cuts off only the loose tip end, and does it eight days after birth (at a time when the boy's blood clotting starts to kick in.)

There are sometimes reasons to do it if a boy is having problems, but then the boy goes to a urologist (NOT a GP, for crying out loud!), has full anesthesia, good followup, etc.

In the US, circumcision is an elective procedure, so I don't know what you're all in a lather about.
