I read the book. This medical and personal disaster was a legacy of those who tried to deny that there was anything about the brain that was male or female. The doctor tried to use his "experiment" as proof that being male or female was only a matter of nurture, not biology.

At least what happened to David Reimer will never be repeated, not in North America at any rate. And John Money has been deservedly discredited.

I haven't read the book, but heard about David a few years ago when he was interviewed on 20/20 or Dateline or some such show (probably the only time I've watched one of those shows during the past 10 years). Reading this article today is an incredible coincidence, since when I got home last night my wife was watching a Learning Channel program on cases similar to David's, and I was telling her about David's case. When it ended, we turned the channel to watch Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and the show's suspect was a teenage boy who decided he was a girl and started taking hormones and was saving up to get an operation, and ended up killing someone who was going to tell "her" boyfriend that "she" still had a penis. I think I'll stick to watching the Andy Griffith Show for the next few days.
