Calls for inquiry into NZ blood system

The Haemophilia Foundation of New Zealand has renewed calls for a public inquiry into the past management of the national blood system.

The renewed call came after it was revealed three New Zealanders are among 1500 plaintiffs world-wide in a class action against major American pharmaceutical companies over the use of blood products taken from high-risk populations such as prison inmates, intravenous drug-users and urban homosexual communities, claiming they were exposed to HIV and hepatitis C.

The haemophiliacs received the potentially contaminated imported blood-clotting agents in the 1970s and 1980s.

Foundation president Mike Carnahan said it was high time the public was informed by a full public inquiry of the national blood system from the mid-1970s to the 1990s, when haemophiliacs were exposed to a "Russian roulette" rate of risk of exposure to potentially contaminated products.

"It is high time to put the issue on the table. It's taken 20 years for this information to surface. What else is waiting to come out and at what cost to our community?"

Attention, Bloodhounds:

Another episode in the stomach-turning story of how Bill and Hillary Clinton, in Arkansas, set up, defended and profited from a scheme to sell blood plasma from state prisoners. This was known to be an unsound and extremely risky practice, and one banned by the FDA in this country, but a loophole allowed the contaminated blood plasma to be exported. The blood was diseased with AIDS and Hepatitis C. Thus the scheme by the Clintons and their crooked friends spread those diseases all over the world. Of course the contamination soon returned to this country to ruin or end many more lives. The haemophiliacs in America, as in other countries, were decimated.

Canada bought some of Governor Clinton's friend's program's contaminated blood, and Canadians were infected with HIV.

Canada was the first victim. But a Canadian pharmaceutical, guided by various Canadian government and Red Cross officials, was instrumental in processing and exporting the same diseased blood -- that's how it got back here.

The RCMP has been on the case for years, and is, I believe, hot on the trail of some of the criminals involved. American press media ducked the story (presumably to protect Clinton), but the Canadian press has not at all been shy about covering it. The tainted blood scandal has been front-paged up there for a good fifteen years.

How do you stop incurable viruses once they are loose in the blood pool? Bill and Hill didn't give that much thought. The money was pouring in. What did it matter to them how many people died and how many other lives were ruined by Hepatitis C and AIDS?

The article is interesting in that the class action lawsuit targets American pharms, which supposedly -- har, har -- had nothing to do with it. It was, as I recall, illegal for them to use prison blood. But who, then, kept the price of plasma sky-high year after year, through all six of Bubba's gubernatorial terms and beyond?
