Yes, women have always stepped up to the plate in times of crisis. The question is, do we wish to intentionally place them at the point of the spear? Also, is it best to have them on the frontlines in police-work and fire-fighting? Both of those professions used to have rigorous physical standards, presumably to protect each other and the general public.
I never knew the derivation of the word Bushido. The final word do, meaning way, is pronounced the same way as the Chinese word tao, meaning way (everyone pronounces it as tau, but it is doh). Clavell's book, Shogun, paints a pretty good picture of life in Japan, during the time of the Shoguns. For my final exam in Japanese religions class, I wrote a paper about the introduction of Buddhism into Japan, but have long since forgotten the details.
