INDIANAPOLIS -- Hazmat crews are dealing with a chemical spill on the northwest side that officials believe was not accidental.

Officials said the spill was contained at Chem Central of Indianapolis at 5850 W. 82nd Street.

Officials closed 82nd Street from Zionsville Road to Interstate 465, and evacuated workers who were exposed to the chemicals and from eight surrounding businesses that were downwind from the plant.

Workers found around 15,000 gallons of a mix of six flammable chemicals were discovered spilled around 5:30 a.m., and emergency officials were called around 8:45 a.m., RTV6's Derrik Thomas reported. There was no runoff or seepage into the water or sewer system from the spill, according to officials with the Pike Township Fire Department.

Officials were conducting air quality tests in the area.

Workers reportedly discovered the spill when they entered the building. Officials believe the tanks were "maliciously opened" over the weekend, but did not provide details on what led them to believe it was not accidental.

Chem Central is a chemical manufacturing and warehousing facility.

No one was injured in the spill, Thomas reported.

Oh yeah - let's call it vandalism (like done by errant teenagers?)

"We're tending to think of it more on the order of vandalism than burglary, but extreme vandalism" said Bob Garner, vice president of environmental affairs for Chemcentral Corp. based in Bedford Park, Ill.

Garner explained whoever did it must have had some knowledge of the chemical industry because it took more than just opening a valve to release the chemicals.

Highly trained "vandals" eh? Vandals that just happen to know which are the highly flammable chemicals - how to open the valves - how to make you look like a liar ......
