I never understood the point of the Libertarian Party in the United States. Wouldn't it make more sense to shape/influence the policies of one of the two major parties? The best they've ever done-and likely the best they'll ever do in the future-was way back in 1980, which was an anomalous situation, you have to admit.

I've never been a member of the LP.

The LP exists for but one reason - to legalize drugs. Well it is hardly surprising a libertarian party would favor such, the LP has allowed drug addled college students to define who they are.
As such you'll often see the LP co-operate with the hard left to advance drug legalization at the expense of all other objectives and even principles.
That being said, real libertarians make up an important group within the Republican Party. While they aren't influential by sheer numbers or cash donations they tend to make up alot of the right leaning internet media and provide some amount of intellectual backing for conservatism on things like budgeting and teh size and scope of government.
